The Impact of Emerging Technologies on Training

In the world of military simulation and training, there are new technologies emerging every day that increase training effectiveness and efficacy. From virtual reality (VR), to augmented reality (AR) and mixed reality (MR), blended training solutions offer a fully immersive experience. In addition, new sensing technologies and advances in artificial intelligence will take the training experience even further to create a seamless experience between the warfighter and the machine.

“There is a sense of new investment in the industry,” according to Conor McKenna, CEO of Vocavio Technologies, a provider of speech analysis software that is integrated into synthetic training environments. Sensing technology allows organizations to train personnel in mission critical environment to accelerate learning and mitigate risk.  From speech recognition to facial recognition, these types of sensing technologies offer clues into the trainee’s understanding and performance, ultimately, boosting training efficacy and fidelity.

Not only will new sensing technologies provide data about human performance and interactions with the machine they are training on, but according to McKenna, AI will play a role in helping the machine adapt to the trainee for greater mission readiness. By being able to adapt to individual trainees, a more personalized and effective training approach can be implemented and warfighters can really train like they fight.
